Domestic Discipline

Dark & deliciously different - Groomed - 5 / 5 stars

Groomed is a crime thriller, a spanking tale, churned up with the pressures of modern marriages. It hooked me from the first page.

Set in Australia during the early days of the internet 1999-2000, snapchat, Instagram, twitter etc do not exist. People connect on internet message boards called forums.

Enter Charlotte, a curious magazine editor. She has found a forum she can’t stop visiting. It’s called Spanking Sheilas. The participants on the site boast of their idyllic marriages built on the ‘naughty-wives-with-stern-husbands’ model. Everything in Spanko-land is perfect: the intimacy, the sex, the rules, and, of course, the hot spankings for breaking those rules.

After reading the posts night after night, Charlotte aches for what the Sheilas have. All she has to do is persuade her husband Connor to join the fun. It doesn’t matter that their marriage is already under a lot of strain. He is dealing with the demands of his ex-wife. Charlotte’s father is gravely ill in the UK. Charlotte decides spankings might be just the thing to bring Connor and her closer together. I loved her tenacity.

This is where the gloves come off. Most DD books portray spanking as a one-cure-fixes-all while delivering sweet ecstasy to those who dare. Man spanks woman. Woman doesn’t protest (much). Smoking sex ensues. Woman succumbs to the charm of her gorgeous alpha male.

Groomed tells a very different story. It shows confronting gaps between expectation and reality.

The book delivers bare-knuckle honesty, insightful intelligence, and occasional humour. It washes away the sugar-coating of fantasy and exposes the perils when innocent people buy into the carefully-edited lives of strangers. What you see may not be what you get.

Charlotte’s growing obsession with DD soon shifts into high gear. As I read, my sympathies were torn between Charlotte and Connor. I understood her obsession all too well. At the same time, to the uninitiated this desire can seem bizarre, hard to assimilate.

When Connor’s finally gives up on the spanking effort, Charlotte reaches out to the Sheilas for help. Soon she is hiding things from Connor and on her way to meet a complete stranger. Heedless of any danger, she meets him in a public place. Nothing can go wrong there, can it?

If you like a well-written book, that challenges some of the fairy tale romances in the DD genre, you’ll love Groomed. If you like a good crime book, go no further.

Disclaimer: I was a beta reader for this book. I loved the earlier version of it so much that I bought it for my Kindle once it was released. It’s worth owning and reading more than once.

Want to know more? From my blog earlier this month:

Blurb

It’s 1999 and Charlotte and Connor have just got the internet at home. One night, Charlotte comes across an intriguing forum. It consists mostly of women posters whose husbands discipline them when they misbehave. In other words, they’re living Charlotte’s dream!

Charlotte’s marriage is in trouble. Work and family pressures have pushed her and Connor apart. The forum posters claim domestic discipline makes marriages closer, more intimate, that sex is through the roof. Charlotte wonders whether introducing the old-fashioned discipline she yearns for can bring her and Connor closer together too.

But Connor doesn’t take to the lifestyle and the failure frustrates Charlotte and drives them even further apart. In desperation, she seeks out a disciplinarian through the forum to satisfy her needs. He seems caring, thoughtful and is willing to take things slowly, allow time to build trust.

But there’s a missing backpacker who just might have a connection with the same disciplinarian.

Can Charlotte trust this charming man she’s met on the internet?

And how will it affect her marriage to Connor?

Will Charlotte ever get the loving discipline she craves?

Thread: My worst spanking

Panda: What was the worst spanking you ever got from your husband? The worst spankings (there were several of them but they were all because of the same thing) I ever got from Hayden happened during our first Christmas after we were married. As you know, I was still struggling with bulimia when we married, and Hayden was trying to help me recover in his inimitable way!

Well, you know what Christmas and the run-up to it is like. All those work functions! Not to mention family dinners. Our calendar was chock-full of parties and dinners, and I was dreading it. The pressure to eat, having to control myself around so much tempting food, all the guilt about whether I was eating too much or too little. Of course, it would have been best to confide in Hayden, tell him I was finding it difficult. But no, of course, like always, I wasn’t very good at being sensible.

I managed the first function (his cricket club barbecue) okayish. I ate more than I was comfortable with, but I didn’t starve myself before or after and I didn’t purge. But my body felt uncomfortable and when we attended the second party (my work party) I couldn’t carry on eating that way till after Christmas. I’d blow up like a balloon!

So I skipped breakfast and lunch on the day of the work function. And fortunately it was a buffet, so I filled up my plate under Hayden’s eagle eye, then circulated, pretending to eat. But when I thought Hayden wasn’t looking, I deposited the contents of my plate in a nearby rubbish bin.

You guessed it. I’d only *thought* Hayden wasn’t looking. Turns out he’d been surreptitiously keeping an eye on me, suspecting I might be up to my old tricks.

He came over to me, touched me lightly on the arm, and said, “I think it’s going to be warmer tonight than we expected,” which is his code for, “When we get home tonight, I am going to warm your bottom.”

And, boy, did he. As soon as we got back (after midnight), he told me, “Get ready for bed and I’ll see you in my office in ten minutes.”

He looked and sounded so stern that I was showered, in my PJs, and in his office in under ten minutes. I didn’t want to risk a second spanking for disobedience!

When I walked into the office, he was sitting in the armchair and holding a wooden ruler in his hand. My insides lurched, and I whispered, “Hayden, I’m so sorry.”

Hayden tapped his knee with the ruler. “We’ll discuss your behaviour after you’ve been punished.”

I draped myself across his lap. He yanked down my pyjama bottoms and positioned me so that my left arm was trapped against his body. He took my free hand and held it against my back, so I couldn’t try to protect my bottom and risk getting my hand struck with the ruler. Then he brought the ruler down hard across my bottom.

He smacked me over and again with the ruler, concentrating on my sit spots. It wasn’t long before I started crying, but he must have given me another twenty hard whacks before he was through.

When he’d finished, he gently lifted me up and cuddled me on his lap. “You behaved very badly at the party tonight, sweetheart,” he said, gently soothing the sore broad stripes on my bottom as he scolded me. “You didn’t eat, you threw your food in the bin, and you tried to deceive me instead of telling me you needed help.”

“I know,” I said between gulps. “I’m so sorry.”

“The thing is,” he continued, “I now feel like I can’t trust you at these functions. So I’m going to take some pre-emptive action before every single function we attend, including Christmas dinner. Before we go out I’m going to spank you. But I will only spank one cheek, and as long as you behave yourself and eat sensibly, that’ll be the end of it. But if you misbehave, we’ll come home and I’ll spank the other cheek. But I hope the one very sore buttock will be a reminder to you to behave yourself all evening.”

The tears dripped from my face as I processed the idea of being spanked almost every day between now and Boxing Night. “We have two functions on Christmas Day,” I whispered.

“And you’ll get two pre-emptive spankings,” he said firmly.

I cried myself to sleep that night, while Hayden cuddled me. I wished I’d never been so stupid at the party. I was already very sore and sorry and the thought of being spanked again in less than twenty-four hours’ time was…well, let’s say I wasn’t looking forward to it a lot.

#WEWRIWA A Time For Will #Erotic #Romance #SciFi

Do you like a little time travel with your erotic romance? Writing A Time For Will was fun as I combined the genres of romance and erotica with a touch of SciFi.

The story so far: solar storms have ripped a hole in the time-space continuum sending Will Dawson forward in time from 1895 to 2017. He has landed on the long-abandoned Pettigrew farm shortly before sisters Lissie and Hope Pettigrew arrive for the weekend.

Lissie and Hope think Will is an actor, sent by their sister Verity who loves practical jokes. Lissie decides to play along (edited for brevity):

“Okay, Verity,” she said to the bushes. “You can come out now.”

“I told you,” Will said fiercely, “I’m the only one here.”

Lissie grinned. “I believe you, cowboy.” Sidling next to him, she caught his primal smell; it spoke of hard work and honest labor.

He narrowed his eyes at her.

She brushed some dust from his shoulder. “I’ve been asking Santa for someone like you my entire life. I guess the wait was worth it.” She made a kissy face at him.

Disclaimer: A Time For Will is intended for a mature audience, ages 18+. Scenes include spanking adult women and explicitly sexual situations. If such content may offend, please do not buy this book.

A Naughty New Year by Kathryn R Blake

It’s almost the Lunar New Year – what better time to enjoy Kathryn R Blake’s novella, A Naughty New Year. This story is available as part of the Mischief under the Mistletoe anthology.

Blurb:

Even good deeds can get you punished.

Kelly Evans is nearly six months pregnant when her Dom husband, Jim, suggests they invite their closest friends over for a private New Year's Eve party. Just a friendly get together, nothing kinky, and no champagne for either of the girls, since Kelly's friend, Tiffany, was a month along further than she was. Given it's New Year's Eve, Kelly feels Jim's no-champagne edict isn't fair, but Jim warns her if she goes against his wishes, she will be punished. Though Kelly understands Jim's reasoning, she still feels he's merely being over-protective, and as much as she loves him a sip of champagne never hurt anyone. That is until now.

Disclaimer: A Naughty New Year is intended for mature readers. 18 and over only! Scenes include spanking adult women. If such content may offend, please do not buy this book.

Excerpt:

Kelly had told him often enough how much she hated being relegated to the guest bedroom, and as much as he preferred she sleep by his side, he would need to insist if she didn't submit, though he suspected neither of them would get much rest. In fact, he doubted she would last more than an hour apart from him, even if she chose that alternative.

"I don't want to go back in there," she admitted.

"And I'd prefer you stayed with me, but there are conditions for that, Kelly."

Her head lowered. "I know." As tears streamed down her cheeks, the robe dropped to the floor. "How do you want me positioned?"

Leaning over, he grabbed two of the pillows near the headboard. Rolling the first into a bolster, he laid it at the edge of the bed. "Bend over this so your belly rests on the other side of it. I'll place another just beneath your breasts.

She lay down as he directed, making no further appeal for clemency despite her trembling.

Once she was properly positioned and as comfortable as she could be in her situation, he ran a hand along the length of her spine. She shivered slightly, but didn't move.

"Good girl," he praised. "Now, tell me why you are here."

She hesitated long enough that he didn't think she'd answer, when she murmured, "Because I disobeyed you by drinking champagne."

"Correct. And why did you decide to disobey me?"

"Because it was New Years, and I didn't think a small sip would hurt me or the baby."

"Was that your decision to make?"

"I thought it was, but I guess not," she sniffed.

Since she couldn't see his face, Jim allowed a smile to curve his lips even as he kept his voice stern. "Trust me. It wasn't." When she didn't argue, he continued, "All right. Five whacks. I want you to count each one aloud, please. I will not deliver the next one until you've called out the previous stroke. If I sense you are deliberately holding back in an effort to delay your punishment. I will add strokes. Any questions?"

More about Kathryn R Blake

Although Kathryn is relatively new to the spanking romance market, she is not new to stories where the hero spanks the heroine. In fact, most of her novels have some sort of spanking in them. However, even in Kathryn's novels where the hero firmly believes in using spanking as a deterrent, he has no desire to cause the heroine injury and takes no delight in hurting the woman of his heart. In fact, sometimes he finds it extremely difficult to follow through on his threats or promises.

To date, all of her heroes are dominant, alpha males who are extremely protective of the women they love. However, part of that protectiveness includes the need for a certain amount of control. They do not suffer defiance or disobedience lightly. Even so, these men aren't infallible, and they do make mistakes, but love and respect will always triumph in the end.

Cassie's Life by PK Corey

Today I’m looking at Cassie’s Life, (#10 in the Cassie’s Space series), a book I love. If you enjoy a story loaded with loving DD, humour, suspense, and romance, look no further. PK Corey delivers that and more in this contemporary novel.

Blurb:

Ask Cassie about her life on the river and she’ll tell you it’s lovely and peaceful. But while Cassie loves the life she lives, peaceful is not always an accurate description. Whether she’s confronting an armed man who’s in a drunken rage, planning a friend’s wedding or dealing with a ghost in a backwoods lodge, Cassie is going to deal with it the best way she knows how. And peaceful doesn’t always work.

When a mysterious phone call comes for Cassandra Wentworth – Cassie’s past is suddenly back to haunt her in a devastating way. Tom has always said nothing from before the time they met counts, but he didn’t know about this.  Sue, Annie, Allie and Jenny are all willing to help, but will it be enough?

Disclaimer: Cassie’s Life is a sweet romance for mature readers, 18 years and over. Scenes include spanking adult women in the context of loving relationships. If such content may offend you, please do not buy this book.

Excerpt:

I knew Tom would be in soon. Most people in situations of such stress have the option of fight or flight. Since the last time I’d run away from Tom I had given him my solemn word I wouldn’t run away from him again, my options were somewhat different – fight or submit. I didn’t want to fight with Tom, but to submit to a spanking…when I’d been the one to defuse the situation… I just wasn’t sure I could accept it.

Tom wasn’t long in following me. One look at his face told me he was a man on a mission and I could only assume that mission would keep me from sitting comfortably for a few days. I knew nothing I could say would change his mind. I might submit physically, but mentally, never. The look of cold fury I gave him as he began removing my clothes was not something he could misinterpret.

I was seething, as Tom undressed me completely – to make me stand before him nude before a spanking was nothing but a sheer power play and I felt he was doing it because of what that hateful Cal had said about listening to authority.

I felt anything but submissive, as I stood nude before him. I didn’t say anything. I was too angry. I waited to see if he would go for the brush or the leather paddle. The answer was neither – he came for me. Putting his hand on the back of my neck he pulled me into a kiss that I’ll remember longer than any spanking. I stood weak kneed from the kiss staring into Tom eyes as he hovered over me a moment before kissing me again as he ran his hands over my body.

I wasn’t even sure how I got on the bed, but Tom was still kissing me as he removed his clothes. We made love with a passion I’m sure most would believe should be reserved for the young. I don’t think I even remember the details, not that I’d share them, but I when I came back to myself I could barely move except to clutch tightly at Tom. Eventually I found my voice.

“I think I’m going to have to take up smoking.”

I heard Tom’s warm chuckle, “Don’t you think you stay in enough trouble without taking up more bad habits.”

“Honey, I have to tell you, if this is your new method of getting my attention when you’re upset with me, I’m behind you all the way.”

PK Corey in her own words:

The love of writing came to me late in life and I spent time trying to fit writing into a busy schedule. Recently I retired, the kids are out and on their own and my wonderful husband encourages me to spend more time exploring the world of writing.

I always hear you should write what you want to read, so I have. I write loving domestic discipline with the stress on ‘loving’. I want a strong man who cherishes the woman he loves and is willing to go to any length to keep her safe and protected.

My Cassie’s Space series shows a mature couple who are deeply in love. Despite loving Cassie’s free-spirited ways Tom is determination to keep her safe, even if it takes a trip over his knee. My new series, Cal’s Law, is about a younger couple. Though they come from very different backgrounds, love and discipline draw them together.

Taming His Virgin Wife by Olivia Starke

Olivia Starke joins me today with Taming His Virgin Wife, Devil Creek Ranch Book 1. This sounds like an exciting new series from this woman who knows a thing or two about horses and the country life.

Can Lucas’ discipline and love heal the wounds of Melody’s past?

Blurb:

Melody:I never expected forever when I married Lucas all those years ago. It was a dare, encouraged by one too many vodka shots. It’s surprising neither of us annulled the marriage. But the truth is, I can’t be a wife, not to any man, not even to sweet, wonderful Lucas, thanks to the monsters of my past that still haunt me to this day.

By some miracle, when I was desperate to save my brother, Lucas reappeared in my life. Lucas, who’d helped me so many times in the six months I’d shared his home as a sixteen-year-old foster kid. I had little choice but to take his offer—move with him to his Wyoming ranch and be his wife, for real this time. Lucas doesn’t know the reason I need the money, and it’s a secret I can’t tell.

Lucas: Running into Melody in an Iowa bar seemed like fate. And when I heard she’s in trouble, I have to help her, because I’ve always felt protective over Melody. In my heart, she’s always been mine.

Now, that she’s with me at Devil Creek Ranch, I find it impossible to ignore the feelings I’ve carried for her since I was a seventeen-year-old kid. I want a wife, a partner in life as well as in my bed, but I know Melody is hiding something from me. Something I fear may drive us apart in the end.

Publisher’s Note: Taming His Virgin Wife is a sweet romance that contains elements of power exchange, adult language and sensual scenes. If any of these offend you, please do not purchase.

Excerpt:

“Melody.” Her name was a raspy whisper.

She closed her eyes, trying to shut him out. But it was no use, his scent filled her head, the memory of his skin and muscles on her fingertips. She heard him shift, then his hand touched her cheek.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She bit her lower lip, trembling.

“Look at me,” he said.

She forced her eyes open. He was inches from her. She waited for the kiss she craved, and sagged toward him. His thumb brushed her mouth.

“I can’t help myself when it comes to you, Mels.”

And then his lips brushed hers. A light, testing touch. A kiss that asked permission, and Melody waited, listening for the screaming monsters in her mind. The fireplace crackled, and the old ranch home creaked as it settled. A moment of silence and freedom from the ghosts of the past and she took advantage. She pressed forward, daring to touch his jaw. The day’s growth of beard rasped against her palm. He cupped the back of her head, taking the kiss further.

The tip of his tongue trailed over her top and bottom lip, and she opened to him, touching his tongue with hers. She’d avoided this type of kissing with other men, and this brand-new kind of intimacy thrilled her. He led her in the kiss, and she eagerly followed, until it became a fevered exploration. Then she was on her back, and he was over the top of her. His fingertips trailed fire around her aching nipple, their kisses growing sloppy, desperate.

She moaned, arching her back, wanting everything he had to offer.

All Work And No Play by Gracie Malling

This is the season that just keeps on giving! Mischief Under The Mistletoe a fourteen-novella anthology available now! Today I’m looking at Gracie Malling’s story, All Work and No Play that is included in this book.

Blurb: It's hard to focus at work when your boss also happens to be your Dom, and Mia is finding it increasingly difficult to balance her work life with her kink life. Christmas, however, is an excellent distraction, and Mia is determined that their first ever office Christmas party will be one to remember. And it will... just for all the wrong reasons!

Editor’s note: These delightfully naughty Christmas spanking stories feature scorching romance and BDSM. Some involve age play, all involve spanking. There’s also a bit of LGBT+, some magic, and a drunken incident with a photocopier. If this isn’t your scene, it might be better to find a nice book about knitting lamp shades, instead.

Excerpt:

“Not so fast, little girl!”

I freeze, five stairs up, and then look back over my shoulder to see Will standing in the hallway glaring up at me.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, trying my best to look innocent.

“Back down here. Now.” He takes off his thick winter coat and hangs it up behind the door, never breaking eye contact.

My belly clenches up in that gorgeous way that is both scary and hot as hell, and I tighten my grip on the bannister rail. “Why?”

“Mia Elizabeth Clarke, you are already in enough trouble as it is.” He raises his voice ever so slightly. “Here. Now.”

“But… but I already had corner time.”

Will grabs hold of the bannister rail and starts up the stairs after me.

I squeak and take the rest of the stairs at a run before sprinting along the landing, throwing open our bedroom door and flinging myself inside. This is a ridiculous plan, however, and I realise this moments later when Will strolls in, calm as you like, shuts the door firmly behind him and then stands there, arms crossed, expression hard and mouth set in a disapproving line.

I retreat until the backs of my thighs hit the bed, and then I sit down on the edge of it with a defeated whimper. “I’m sorry…”

He raises an eyebrow and takes a deliberate step towards me. “Sorry for what, young lady? For being a brat at work, for running off just now or for both?”

I hug my arms, press my cheek into my shoulder and mumble something incoherent.

“What was that?” His voice has that sharp edge to it that tells me I am in big trouble, but for some reason lovely submissive Mia seems to have disappeared since our little post-meeting chat and my brat persona has well and truly taken over.

“I said I don’t know,” I grumble, staring down at the carpet and still hugging my arms with my face averted.

“Stand up.”

I shake my head, squidging my cheek deeper into my shoulder, and stay put.

“Right.” In my peripheral vision, I see Will take two quick steps forwards and then he grabs hold of my hair and yanks me to my feet.

Before I have the chance to do anything more than shriek and wriggle, he sits down hard on the edge of the bed and drags me over his lap.

“You want to act like a brat, Mia?” he demands, his voice harsh, as he pulls up my sensible work skirt and hooks his fingers around the waistband of my knickers. “Well then, I’m going to treat you like a brat.”

Emerald Christmas by Pippa Greathouse - Another FREE cold weather, hot story

Are you enjoying the free stories that Blushing Books has been offering every day? Don’t miss today’s from that wonderful writer, Pippa Greathouse. Here’s a quick glimpse of Emerald Christmas to pique your interest:

Blurb: Cassandra Fairfax, has had it. She has decided to take refuge in the home her late husband Daniel built for her in days before his death, nestled in the side of a mountain in North Carolina. Matthew Downing, who owns the mountain and the emerald mine it sits on has told her the house is hers to claim, and claim it she will, just in time for Christmas. And she’s managed to arrive in the middle of a terrible storm just in time to see lightning strike the side of the mountain where her home is.

Matthew Downing is a good man; so everyone says. But on the fourth anniversary of his wife’s death, he is in no mood to celebrate. And when Cassandra shows up, full of attitude, defiance, and her own form of determination, he’s not at all inclined to put up with it.

After lightning strikes the house, he finds himself chasing her up the side of the mountain in pursuit of a little boy who doesn’t speak. Matthew rescues both of them. He delivers the child back home, and furiously marches her to the sheriff’s office.

He’s stunned, when he realizes who she is. She’s burned her bridges behind her. She’s wet, cold, bedraggled and forlorn after weathering the storm, and he knows she needs someone to look out for her. He’s also sure he’s lost his mind.  She may be loveable, but in his opinion she’s also a brat.

Yes, he’ll take care of her; yes, he’ll marry her, but there are conditions to which she must agree.

She understands that he’ll discipline if she’s disobedient or defiant, but the last of the requirements is the hardest of all. He refuses the very thing she came here to do… to celebrate Christmas.

Can she agree to this? To any of it? Cassandra isn’t sure what to think of this tall, handsome, strict man she’s married. And she certainly never expects to love him.

And Matthew wonders just what he’ll be able to do with his lovable Cassandra on this Emerald Christmas.

A captain in her papa’s merchant fleet, Mia Cadley doesn’t willingly give up the helm. Nor does she always sail above board.

When her father forces her to wed as a means to protect her, she resists letting her husband become her master and commander. But can she hold course against a tide of pleasure beyond imagining?

Synopsis:

Devin Winthrop is at the helm of his life and the royal navy ship the Iron Rose. His course is set and his compass true. The Caribbean Sea is the perfect place to finish out his career and he expects only fair winds.

Then he is kidnapped and blackmailed into marriage. And while his new bride is beautiful, smart and willing in bed she is also a pirate’s daughter. One with more than a few pirate qualities of her own.

Can Devin pull the wind from his wife’s sails, without more than shots across her stern before she ties an anchor around his neck and sinks him to the ocean floor? Or will the pirate’s daughter succeed in plundering his world, his career and worst yet his heart? The winds are turning but whose sails will they fill?

Captain of Her Destiny

Mia Cadley is no jellyfish. She’s lived her entire life aboard the beautiful sailing ships of her papa’s fleet. She’d captained her own ships on all the salt seas. But under the guise of their merchant business Mia and Papa are working to solve the mystery of who’s responsible for her mother’s death? And perhaps not all her methods are above boards.

When her papa forces her to wed, a navy captain no less, in order to keep her safe, Mia is resistant to everything he might offer her. Even if what he offers are pleasures beyond her imagining.

Can Mia hold her own again a man who’d try and set the course for her? Or will his ability to master and command her body as well as his commitment to disciple her acts of mutiny sink her ship before she can find safe harbor?

Sail together or break apart on the rocks.

A ship can have only one captain, both Devin and Mia must set course and sail as one if they’re going to stay afloat in the increasingly dangerous conditions on the seas they sail. Can two people as different as east and west find common winds in a hurricane of love before the tides turn against them? Passion is high on the seas as they try but the currents may not be in their favor.

Marie Hall, in her own words:.

Marie Hall, Romance and a little something more

Romance can be found in all things. Romance with a little something more, is even better. I write Romance with that little something more. A little more heat, a little more fun and a little more kink. My stories are romance for the heart and erotic for the body. A dominate man willing to take on a woman who needs to learn how to submit without giving away everything she is, this is the theme I use in my writing.

Carrie Thompson arrives in Lesterville, Washington Territory, in 1885, quite alone. She has no money, no friends and, with the hotel full, no place to stay. Hank Barrow, the man she is to marry fails to show up to meet her, and she has no idea what to do.

On top of that, the justice of the peace has left town and won’t be back for well over two weeks.

When the sheriff of Lesterville, Sam Pettigrew, offers the top floor of his house to her, she has no option but to accept his hospitality; after all, he has assured her that Mr. and Mrs. Clancy, the caretakers, will be there to chaperone her.

One thing she learns about Sam, however, is that, while he is willing to go to great lengths to protect her, he has very little patience with young ladies who are not completely honest with him—and those who disobey. She, unfortunately, has already broken that rule and is about to break it again.

As days go by, she sees no sign of her intended. When she does finally see him, she realizes his instability and volatility, and she’s left with a choice. Can she make the right decision?

Or will keeping her word endanger her own life?

Excerpt:

Her hands reached up around his neck before she knew it, and she eagerly tasted his tongue, allowing her own to dance delicately with his. Suddenly, she realized how wanton she seemed, and gave a strangled cry.

“Carrie,” he said gruffly into her hair. “Marry me. I cannot allow you to marry Hank Barrow. I’ll tell him that I have forbidden you to—”

“—Samuel Pettigrew.” As if she fully heard what he’d just said, she stiffened. “You have forbidden me? I seem to recall you telling him that it was up to me. That no one would make that decision for me. And if I decide not to marry him, I'll pay him back the money he spent from what I earn from my sewing. He must be patient and wait for me to make it.”

Sam stared down at her, his eyes narrowing. “Are you refusing my offer of marriage, then?

She pushed back against his chest, glaring. Her voice was angry. “‘Carrie, marry me,’ is not an offer, Sheriff Pettigrew. It’s an order. I haven't made up my mind. And I’ll answer you when you ask. Nicely.” She stepped back. “I’ve decided I wish to be courted. Properly.”

“Have you now,” His voice was amused.

Although she couldn’t see his face clearly in the darkness, she heard the mirth in his voice.

“Yes. I have. With buggy rides. And flowers. And a ring. And I wish my suitor to get down on one knee to beg me to marry him.” She lifted her chin and then turned away.

“I see. Do you see Hank Barrow doing that?”

“I don’t care. It's what I want. I'll tell him that. Maybe if he knows—”

“If you tell him anything, I’ll insist on going with you. You are absolutely not to go alone.”

She whirled back, stomping a foot. But the softness of the ground and the softness of her foot somehow lost the desired effect. “I don’t need anyone to go with me.” Turning to march back up to the house, she made it two steps before she was lifted off the ground and tucked under his arm.  She kicked and squirmed, trying to get away. “Let me go!”

Sam took her to the porch, and put one foot up on the second step. Taking her by the waist, he plopped her over his thigh, holding her there with one hand. With the other, he lifted the tail of her gown and planted ten hard swats on her bare bottom, before standing her upright to face him.

“Let that be a warning, young lady. If I so much as catch a hint of you planning to go out there by yourself, the next spanking you get will be with the strap. Hear me?”

Even on the second step, she was forced to crane her neck to meet his eyes. Her own were blazing with anger, but tears were pooling. She turned to run into the house, forgetting the last step. When his hands on her waist caught her, and set her upright on the top, she took off, jerking open the front door and running up the staircase to her room.

Excerpt:

Rose cleared her throat to get her attention, but Katie defiantly turned her gaze in the opposite direction.

Rose moved in close, speaking quietly. “If that is how you want to play this situation, then you may go have a timeout on the sofa over there.” Her breath tickled Katie’s ear.

Katie faced the direction of said sofa but shook her head. There was no way she was going to sit away from everyone like an errant child. She would have to answer for her potty mouth, but that would happen in private.

“That was not a suggestion, little girl. You will go plant your bottom on the couch with both of your feet flat on the floor and your palms on your knees. You will pick a place on the carpet in front of you to focus on and will not move a muscle until I come and get you.” The stern directive sent a shiver down the entire length of Katie’s spine. Her heart wanted to obey, wanted to hand over control, but her brain would not let go, and she could not make herself move.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Her voice sounded wooden to her own ears, and she was taken aback by her audacity. Katie was naughty, especially deep in her Little space, but she wasn’t usually defiant. It wasn’t in her nature. She yearned to please those around her, especially Rose and Keith. Her brain and heart continued their tug of war until the final nail was hammered into her psyche.

“You may either obey and have your discreet time-out on the comfortable couch, or I will take you by the ear and we can find a bathroom for the attitude adjustment you are so desperately begging for.”

Katie’s muscles went rigid, and she shut her eyes tight. Rose did not make idle threats, ever.

More about Allysa Hart:

I am a full-time mom to a sassy, strong-willed, loveable little girl. Okay, so she is all me. I am on the wrong side of 30, and I have been married to my best friend for over eight years. Like most couples, we have our ups and downs, but I could not imagine doing life with anyone else by my side. We are Southern California transplants, currently residing in a very rural part of the east coast. I have two crazy dogs that I adore, even though they drive me out of my ever-loving mind, most days.

I have recently rediscovered my love of words and decided to become a writer. My first story is my heart and soul, and it reaches into the depths of all that is me. I also create covers, promos, and logos for authors. I have met some amazing friends on this journey that I now happily call family. Without my family members, whether biological or chosen, I would not be half the person I am today. Their constant love and support keep me afloat.
