Excerpt:

“Are you okay?”
Rylan swallowed at Cameron’s concern and nodded.  “Are you sure you still want me to move in?”  The look of concern on Cameron’s face made his throat feel tight.
“I want you safe but more than that, I want you in my life.  I still want you very much to move in with me.”
“Yes to both.  I… I want that.”
Cameron’s gaze dropped to his mouth and paused for a long minute before he met Rylan’s gaze.  “Can I kiss you?”
Oh, yes, please.
Unable to force the words past his throat, he nodded instead.
Rylan not knowing what to expect, couldn’t prevent the shiver when Cameron cupped his face.  He moaned aloud when Cameron’s lips grazed over his lower one.  Cameron took his time exploring, searching and yet not deepening the kiss as he passed over Rylan’s lips with his own.
“Rylan,” Cameron breathed.
“Please.”
That one word was all it took.
“I’ve wanted nothing more.”  Cameron tilted his mouth as he pressed their lips together, causing Rylan’s entire world to tilt on its axis.
Rylan gripped Cameron’s hips tighter in his hold, pulling him closer, as Cameron slid his tongue over the seam of his lips, asking for permission to enter.  Rylan eagerly opened, savoring the taste of peppermint and black coffee as Cameron deepened the kiss and stole Rylan’s breath in the same moment.
When they broke off and dragged in deep breaths, Cameron moved his lips behind his ear before he explored Rylan’s neck.  Rylan tilted his head back, giving him access and drawing sensations from his untried body that left him throbbing.
Rylan never knew his neck and the area behind his ear would turn him into mush.  He bit his lip to prevent a moan from escaping his throat, but Cameron bit his earlobe and spoke.
“Let me hear you.”
“You’re driving me crazy.”
“Now you know how I felt the moment I spotted you on the dance floor.  For me, that’s saying something.”
Before Rylan could form a thought to reply, Cameron moved his mouth over Rylan’s and he lost himself to the sensations that shivered throughout his body.  Cameron’s growl absorbed his moan as he deepened the kiss, pulling him closer to his hard body.
Rylan’s eyes fluttered closed, unable to keep his eyes on the sexy-as-sin sight of Cameron’s flushed face.  The kiss turned into an inferno and Rylan could feel his cock swelling in his sweats and he knew if Cameron stepped closer, he would experience Rylan’s excitement first hand.
He opened for Cameron’s exploration and instead of the intense sensations of an aggressive kiss, Cameron’s slowed his movements as his tongue explored him until he was panting and all thoughts disappeared.  There were only the sensations Cameron drew from him.

Friends With Benefits by Poppy Flynn

Are you looking for a hot new book for the weekend? Friends With Benefits by Poppy Flynn has just been released. This is book 5 in the Club Risqué series. As the series name suggests, it’s not for the vanilla reader.

“You can’t change somebody else’s feelings for you…well, you can make them hate you, but you can’t make them love you.”

Blurb:

When she'd been young and naïve and had foolishly believed that wishing on stars would be enough to grant her deepest desires, Trinity had spent years in a 'non' relationship as a 'friend with benefits,' believing that Christian would one day be ready to make things official. But reality reared its ugly head, and instead, he broke her heart when he told her he wanted to move on with someone else.
With both his business and personal life out of control and disintegrating around him, Christian had been completely up front and honest about the fact he didn't have the time or the effort to dedicate to a relationship, and Trinity had insisted she understood and accepted the situation, only to be blindsided when he revealed that he'd fallen in love with someone else.
Years later and eons wiser, they find each other again, but can things be any different the second time around?
Publisher's Note: Friends With Benefits is a contemporary second chance romance contains a theme of power exchange as well as graphic scenes. If this is offensive to you, please do not read the book.

Excerpt:

The kiss turned passionate and incendiary. Christian tightened his hand in her hair and kept her head immobilized while he devoured her mouth, his tongue plundering and demanding. Conquering. He bit at her lips and then soothed with his tongue, he nipped at her jaw and again behind her ear before finding his way back to her mouth and continuing his passionate onslaught. He ground his pelvis into her softness and Taryn whimpered, seeking to rub at the ache of her own desire in an effort to ease the aching need she felt.
She was ready to climb up and clamber all over him when he finally broke the kiss. “Goddamn it, this isn’t right Tara, he groaned, his voice catching. “I want you. And God knows, I really need somebody right now, but I don’t have anything to offer in the way of a relationship, because the truth is that I’m so wrung out from Dad’s death that there’s nothing left to give.”
He heaved a tortured sigh and started to disentangle himself from her. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be taking advantage of you like this. I just want to feel close to someone physically, I need to remember that I’m still alive, but that’s no excuse for mauling you like I’ve turned into some kind of rabid animal.”
He sucked in a shuddering breath. “Forgive me, Tara, I shouldn’t have done this to you,” he whispered. “I’ll let myself out and go and find someone who knows the score. I hope I haven’t ruined your birthday for you,” he finished soberly, his forehead pressed against her own and his eyes squeezed tightly shut.
Taryn wasn’t sure which emotion hit her the hardest. The fact that he had come so close to making all her lustful fantasies come true, the fact that he wanted no strings sex without any kind of relationship, or the fact that he was about to go out and find someone else to sate those heartfelt needs. She even overlooked the fact that he continued to call her Tara.
Ultimately, it was the thought of Christian with another woman that spurned her into making a choice that would end up having repercussions on her life for many years to come. The idea of him loosing himself in another woman’s body, even if it was just a temporary interlude of meaningless sex, had the green-eyed monster inside of her rearing its ugly head and messing with her brain so much that she just couldn’t see past it.
“The only thing that will ruin this birthday is if you walk out of that door after twisting me up like that, only to leave me hanging,” she panted. He looked like he might argue, but Taryn ploughed on. “I know what’s going on in your life better than anybody else on this earth. I know exactly what you’re having to deal with both on a business and on a personal level. I understand all of the restrictions on your time and all of the constraints on your allegiances and I have first-hand knowledge of the entire depth of your commitments. I already live with them, Christian. I’ve lived with them for almost the past two years and I’ve been your escort for the past nine months because I understand all of those reasons. You’re my closest friend Christian, and anything which is within my power to grant, I will do for you and if that includes being a warm body in your bed so that you can lose yourself for a little while, then I’ll do that too.”
Christian was quiet for the longest time and the silence was becoming so drawn out it was getting awkward.
Finally, Taryn took a step away from him and tried to surreptitiously blink away the tears that were starting to prickle behind her eyes.
“I guess it’s my turn to apologize now,” she said stiffly, turning toward the front door to open it for him. “I didn’t mean to overstep the mark.” The words faltered, and she cleared her throat when they came out as more of a croak. “I hope this won’t affect our friendship.”
But it would, wouldn’t it. How could it not?
Taryn had just reached out to turn the door handle when there was a flurry of movement behind her and, in the next second, she was whirled around so fast that her head spun and Christian had her pinned against the smooth wood of the door, his hard body pressing into hers and his breath hot in her ear.
“You need to be sure about that, Taryn. Because if we do this, then there’s no turning back and I’m just selfish and desperate enough, right now, to take that gift and keep it and use it over and over again. Not just tonight, but tomorrow night, and next week, and next month. This won’t just be a one-night thing sweetheart.”
Taryn’s heart almost beat out of her chest as he offered as close to what she wanted as she was ever going to get…for now at least. The fact that he wanted more than a one-night stand had her heart and her hopes soaring. It was a start. Maybe not ideal, but enough for now. His pain would heal in time and his mother would become less clingy and dependent. The company business would be less demanding once everything settled down again and Christian would gradually get his life back. She could be patient and she was already prepared to wait. She’d been waiting all this time, after all, with much less to show for it than a physical relationship.
She was a virgin and she wanted her first time to be with someone she loved. She didn’t think she would ever love anyone except Christian.
And he had remembered to call her Taryn. Of all the cautions and concerns he had warned her of, that was what she took away with her. That was what stuck in her mind because it must surely be a sign.
“I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life,” she whispered against his lips.

Jade, Dark Assassins book 4 by Valerie Ullmer

Valerie Ullmer joins me today with Jade, Dark Assassins book 4.

Blurb:

Jade never wanted a mate.  She loved being an assassin and she had a family in her fellow assassins, their mates, and little Silas.  She truly had everything she needed.  But when Ghost assigned her to track the same immortals who tried to kill Xander’s family, she couldn’t refuse.
But the complication arises when Ghost requests she partner with Noah, a human and ex-special forces soldier.  Jade has never worked with a human before, much less one that hated her from the moment he laid eyes on her.  But she was a professional and if she could play a part in destroying the immortals who threatened her family, she could accept the human.  If only she knew how to fight her attraction to him.
All Noah Hale wanted was to kill the immortals who lured his best friend and fellow ex-Navy SEAL to his death.  He had no desire to be teamed with a beautiful tracker who mesmerized him the moment she turned her emerald eyes his way.  But in order to stop other soldiers from pursuing the same fate, he needed to swallow his pride and work with a group of immortals he didn’t trust.
As Jade and Noah track the group of shifters through the mountains of Colorado, the danger lurking around every corner threatens everything they both hold close.  Will they be able to find a way through, together?+

Disclaimer: Jade is intended for mature readers, ages 18+. It includes sexually explicit scenes.

Excerpt:

Jade caught a scent of a human as she entered the fourteen-story building in downtown Snowfall.  It wasn’t just any human scent, but something that made all of her instincts flare.  She knew that she’d never caught this particular scent before, but something told her that this human might be important to her.  She tried to brush it off as quickly as the thought came, but she couldn’t find it coincidental she smelled it in the same steel building owned by Ghost and housed the headquarters of Dark Company.
As she dismissed the fleeting thought of searching for the scent, her heart thumped once, hard, in her chest at the thought of not finding its owner.  She forced herself to walk toward the elevator bank, ignoring the unwanted perusals she received from the men in the lobby.  Even in an unassuming hoodie and black yoga pants, she drew unwanted attention.  A side effect of being an immortal.
The elevator opened as soon as she pressed the up-button and she kept her gaze down as she walked into the elevator.  She entered the code to get to Ghost’s private floor, her movements too quick to be caught by the human eye, before she squeezed into the corner.  Jade used her other senses as three men in suits and two women entered the enclosed space with her.  There was no need to glance at the glass interior that covered the back wall to see what she looked like.
She sensed eyes on her. Instead of searching out the gaze, she whipped her long, straight dyed black hair into a bun on the back of her head with quick movements before sneaking her hands into the front pockets of her hoodie.
Jade waited patiently as the car traveled toward the penthouse, her ultimate destination, but she couldn’t help but try to find the intriguing scent from earlier.
After my meeting.

All she knew was he hadn’t used the particular elevator she was in and the higher the lift took her in the building, the more his scent dissipated.
In her entire existence, or what she remembered of it, she’d never been attracted to…anyone.  She’d never felt the pull to find someone either.  But lately, she’d felt increasingly restless whenever she had any downtime and her skin tingled in a way that had nothing to do with signaling immediate danger. It was as though her body tried to convey something she didn’t understand.
Her thoughts were interrupted when a man who had gotten into the elevator with her on the first floor stepped into her personal space.
“Hey, beautiful?”
Jade rolled her eyes and raised her head to glare at the man.  Of course, he wouldn’t take the hint that she wanted to be left alone. To emphasize the point, she crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, moving away from his intrusion.
The man decided to take this as an invitation and moved to wrap his arm around her waist.  The move gave her a clear shot to his ribs and she took it, gently moving her elbow back and making contact.  She flinched when she heard a distinctive crack, realizing she hadn’t been careful enough.  Before she could apologize, the elevator door opened and he ran off without looking back, holding onto his side.
She sighed.

Life imitating art

I’m a worrier. I worry about social injustice, climate change, animal cruelty, racism, child poverty…the list goes on.

One of these issues seems to crop up in every book I write, either directly or indirectly.

The basic premise of His Land, His Law was inspired by days of wonderful hiking in the forests of Salt Spring Island (one of Canada’s Gulf Islands). His Land, His Law is about competing claims on an important tract of forest. Both of the main characters have indigenous roots (Luke is 1/8th Tsawout and Cara is 1/8th Inuit). She wants to save the forest, he wants to reap the material wealth that would come with its destruction.

When they confront each other, there is major conflict which, of course, is resolved by the end of the book.

One of my main pleasures in writing is being able to give stories a Happily Ever After (HEA) ending. You know, the thing that happens far too infrequently in real-life.

The Gulf Islands have seen many chainsaw conflicts. Now, four and half months after the release of His Land, His Law, a new one has arisen:

First Nations at odds over logging of reserve land on Saturna Island.

As the article concludes, the decisions about whether to log or not are never easy, like a lot of environmental and social issues. Economics and preservation will always be at odds.

That doesn’t mean we should hide from the hard choices. So I touch on them gently in my novels, in the hope that visualizing a HEA might be one step closer to finding one.

What do you worry about? If you could have a single HEA today, what would it look, smell, and taste like?
